Hello! My name is Fernando Abárzuza. I am currently a predoctoral researcher at the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE) in Barcelona, Spain. I belong to the Observational Cosmology group, although my PhD work is primarily focused on infrared detectors and astronomical instrumentation.
My main research activity is the ground electro-optical characterization of the H2RG sensor that will fly on the ARRAKIHS space telescope, an ESA F-class mission aimed at obtaining unprecedented observations of galaxy halos to address key questions in galactic evolution and cosmology. Other parts of my PhD involve the characterization of very-long-wavelength infrared sensors for the Athena project, in the context of atmospheric monitoring.
Beyond instrumentation and detectors, I have a strong interest in mathematics didactics. I currently teach Calculus and Geometry to first-year Architecture students at the ETSAV (School of Architecture of the Vallès), and I have formerly worked as a teacher at Ramon Fuster secondary school.
Some of my long-standing obsessions include transportation systems (especially trains), typography, and the piano.
If you’d like to know more, you can find information about my current projects here. I also occasionally write about various topics on my blog. If you’d like to get in touch, feel free to reach out.
